Yep, you read that right—an avocado study from Loma Linda University in California is actually paying volunteers to eat avocados. Dream job = found.
Researchers at the university's School of Public Health are launching an avocado study to figure out whether eating avocados can help you lose weight—specifically belly fat, which research shows is particularly bad for your health. So, in the name of science, 250 paid participants will be assigned to one of two conditions: either eating an avocado a day (!!!) or eating just two per month (still awesome).
Aside from being Instagram catnip, avocados have a long list of health benefits—they're loaded with antioxidants, fiber, and plant-based protein. (In fact, Kourtney Kardashian uses avocados to power her workouts.) But avocados really earn their nutrition accolades thanks to the megadose of healthy fats in each buttery bite.
Healthy fats—aka monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats—can help reduce your risk of heart disease and help your body absorb healthy vitamins from your diet. And while it may sound counterintuitive, research has shown that eating healthy fat can actually help you lose weight. (Want proof? Look no further than the keto diet, which is packed with healthy high-fat foods.)
Of course, it is possible to have too much of a good thing; eating too many healthy fats, including avocados, can make you gain weight. One avocado has 322 calories and 29 grams of fat—and that can add up fast, considering the daily recommended fat intake for adults is between 44 and 78 grams, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The avocado study will put this to the test, examining 1) whether avocados can help you slim down, and 2) if so, how many avocados you can eat before going overboard. (Here's how to figure out if you're getting too many healthy fats in your diet.)
The best part of all this? The 250 volunteers will get paid $300 for their six-month stint eating avocados (in addition to the avocados themselves because avocados are expensive, you guys).
