Blue Wine Has Finally Made It to the U.S.
After over a year of waiting, the millennial-targeted, Instagram-friendly, sweet white wine will hit shelves in select states this September.
If you've ever struggled to pick between a smooth glass of cabernet or a zesty sauvignon blanc, things are about to get a lot harder. The Spanish company Gik has finally managed to bring its infamous blue wine to America, and it will start hitting the shelves in Miami, Boston, and Texas this September, Eater reports.
The European winemakers first made headlines for their neon-blue wine last summer, leading to more than 30,000 pre-orders from the U.S., which never actually shipped due to regulatory roadblocks. Now, after over a year of hype, Gik is finally able to bring their chilled, sweet wine stateside. (Related: The 20 Best Wines Under $20)
While the idea of blue wine seems strange and unnatural, the 11.5% alcohol content beverage is made using both red and white grapes from vineyards in La Rioja, Zaragoza, León, and Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. The formula took two years to perfect and uses indigo dye and anthocyanin, natural and organic pigments found in grape skin, to give the liquid its potion-like color, and added non-calorie sweeteners for taste. And, obviously, the wine targets millennial drinkers because, well, millennials are drinking all the wine.
As far as the taste goes, Gik cofound Aritz López told Vice's Munchies last year to expect a blend of something sweet and fresh. "Surprisingly, when we did a blind tasting, just one of 15 people said it was a wine," he said. "Among the reactions, we found some people even saying it was a soft drink!"
If all goes well, Gik also has their eyes on markets in New York, Michigan, New Jersey, Nevada, California, and Washington-but if the idea of waiting gives you the blues, the company is also offering a pre-order option that'll set you back $16 a bottle.
