You know soda is loaded with sweeteners and empty calories-but this soda from Mom's Sugar Solution by Laura Chalela Hoover is a serious exception. Not only is it naturally sugar-free, it's flavored with hibiscus tea, which is rich in antioxidants and has been linked to lowered blood pressure. (Related: 8 Health Benefits of Tea)

Hoover suggests subbing in passion fruit tea if you can't find hibiscus, but you can use this recipe as a blueprint for carbonating any tea. (Here are 10 more healthy soda swaps to play around with.) That means infinite possibilities the next time a soda craving strikes.

Ruby Red Soda

Makes: 1 serving

Prep Time: 2 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 hibiscus tea bags
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes
  • 3 thin slices lime
  • 1/2 cup soda water

Directions

  1. Bring water to a boil in a small saucepan or tea kettle, then remove from heat and pour into a mug. Add tea bags; steep 5 minutes to create a bright red "condensed" tea.
  2. Remove tea bags from mug and let tea cool at least 10 minutes.
  3. Pour tea into a tall glass; add ice cubes, 2 slices lime, and soda water. Serve with the remaining lime slice on the rim of the glass.
