Sure, you know this leafy green is good for you, but chances are you don't know all of the health benefits your kale smoothie or salad really delivers. It's not just trendy; kale is loaded with tons of vitamins and minerals that help protect virtually every part of your body. (Psst... Check out our guide to 17 other healthy greens!)

Here are a few that are pretty shocking:

  • 1 cup chopped kale has 134 percent of your daily recommended amount of vitamin C (an orange only has 113 percent), which is important for immune health and joint health
  • 1 cup of kale also has 121mg of ALA, a type of omega-3 acid that's essential to brain health
  • 1 cup of kale has 133 percent of your daily recommended amount of vitamin A , which helps support skin health and vision
  • 100g of kale has more calcium (150mg) than an equal amount of milk (125mg), making it good for your bones and good for maintaining a healthy metabolism

Just be careful! Kale is one of the most likely crops to be covered in pesticide residue, so opt organic when you can. (Looking for a new way to eat kale? Check out these recipes that use the versatile veggie.)
