In yesterday's post I revealed some sugar stats about soda and other sweetened drinks. If you're a diet beverage drinker you may think you're off the hook, but the truth is sticking with sugar free versions may not shrink your odds of becoming overweight.

According to the studies obesity risk actually increases with each daily serving of diet soda, even more than for people who gulp down the sugary stuff! One study found that for people who drank 1-2 cans of diet soda a day, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was 54.5 percent, compared to 32.8 percent for people who drank the same amount of regular.

Why? The answer isn't 100% clear but there are some theories. Some experts think that artificial sweeteners may stoke a sweet tooth. In other words you may unknowingly seek out more sugary foods after experiencing a sugary sensation. Others think it's psychological – you may unconsciously overeat other foods because you feel virtuous about choosing a diet drink.

But regardless of the reason I'm just not OK with anything artificial. Nutrition is far more than just calories in, calories out. It's really about nourishment and matching your diet to your body's needs. In my opinion, you won't find that in a can or bottle of diet cola.

So what should you drink instead? Come back tomorrow for my favorite soda substitutes!
