Yesterday I posted about some ideal pre-workout meals and when it comes to this topic one of the questions I'm asked most often is, "Isn't it better to workout on an empty stomach?" Without a doubt the answer is no.

During aerobic exercise you burn a combo of carbs and fat. It would be amazing if by eliminating carbs your body resorted to burning pure body fat, but it just doesn't work that way. Without adequate carbs your body has no choice but to break down your own muscle mass for fuel, and the side effects include slowing down your metabolism, losing muscle strength, and increasing your injury risk.

So if you aren't hungry when you wake up and you want to hit the gym or go out for a run take a few minutes to eat some "good" carbs – a small banana, a slice of whole grain toast, or a half portion of oatmeal. Even if you don't feel it you'll be sparing your muscles from become breakfast!

As for what to eat after a workout check back tomorrow :)
