How to Build in a Superbowl Splurge
Whether you're rooting for the Steelers or the Packers chances are you're going to have to make some choices about Superbowl cuisine. Yesterday I talked about choosing healthier versions of traditional favorites. Today it's all about choosing your splurges. Personally I have more of a salt tooth than a sweet tooth, so I'd rather go for chips over a cupcake or brownie any day.
Of all the traditional Superbowl fare what's your can't-live-without? In other words ask yourself:
If someone told me I couldn't eat any of this ever again what would I miss the most?
Looking over this food, what do I feel I can't realistically give up for the rest of my life?
For me the answer would definitely involve tortilla chips! Fortunately whole corn counts as a whole grain, so corn chips fried in a plant-based oil can "count" as a whole grain and healthy plant-based fat. If I balance them out with some raw veggies and salsa and a lean protein (like black beans or tofu) I can get my satisfaction factor and still achieve what I refer to in my new book as the ‘Goldilocks effect' – not too little, not too much, just right (e.g. full, satisfied and energized).
This concept of splurging on one item and choosing others to balance it out might feel strange if you're used to all or nothing eating (e.g. if I have one "bad" thing I blew it and might as well go crazy). But I can assure you that building a splurge into a balance – without the guilt - feels sooooo much better than overdoing it then depriving yourself the next day to make up for overindulging.
