The next time you want to pop a tylenol, be sure to check the label! McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the company that owns Tylenol, announced earlier today that starting in September 2011, it is decreasing the daily recommended amount of Extra Strength Tylenol from eight pills to six per day in hopes of lowering the amount of accidental acetaminophen overdoses.

Acetaminophen, the main active ingredient in Tylenol, is found in almost every kind of painkiller, including Sudafed, Percocet and Vicodin. However, excessive amounts of acetaminophen have been linked to liver damage and death, and the FDA estimates that accidental overdoses sends about 56,000 people to the emergency rooms per year.

This doesn't mean you have to give up Tylenol every time you have a fever! Just be careful to read the new labels and make sure to stick to the recommended daily amount.
