You likely already know that getting a good night's rest is essential for your health and looks, but did you know that you could further capitalize on those beauty sleep gains by swapping out your sheets? Namely, we're talking about opting for a silk pillowcase. Yes, of course, it feels ultra-luxurious and indulgent, but there are also legit benefits to snoozing on silk.

"Cotton or linen pillowcases can cause friction and pulling on the skin, leading to lines and wrinkles over time," explains Devika Icecreamwala, M.D., a Berkeley, California-based dermatologist. "Silk pillowcases glide over your face and reduce this tugging. "While they're admittedly not some kind of miraculous anti-aging cure—you still need to abide by all your other wrinkle-prevention practices, like using sunscreen daily—they can be one helpful piece of the puzzle. They're also beneficial for those with sensitive or dry complexions; not only is silk hypoallergenic but, unlike cotton, it doesn't absorb moisture from your skin, says Dr. Icecreamwala. (

The benefits are similar when it comes to hair. Silk pillowcases are a good option for pretty much all hair types, but especially those with curly, frizzy hair, says celebrity stylist René Fris of Salon SCK in New York City and founder of the eponymous product line. Again. That's because there's less friction and the hair is gliding smoothly across your pillow, it's less likely that the cuticle (the outermost layer of the hair) will get roughed up. The result? Smoother strands that are easier to brush out, fewer tangles, and less frizz, points out Fris.

If you're considering investing in a silk pillowcase, there are a few things you should know, including how to wash a silk pillowcase. As with any pillowcase, it's important to wash it regularly; dirt, oil, and bacteria can build up on a silk pillowcase just like they would on a cotton one, upping the likelihood of breakouts, says Dr. Icecreamwala. Be sure to follow the care instructions on the specific pillowcase you have, but generally, these either need to be hand-washed or machine-washed on the delicate cycle and line-dried. (

You might also be wondering if you should be opting for a silk or satin pillowcase. There is in fact a difference between these two. Silk is a natural fiber and a type of fabric derived from the silkworm. Satin, on the other hand, is a fabric weave. Any fabric can technically have a satin weave, silk included. But to reap the benefits mentioned above, you'll want a true silk pillowcase.
