What One Celebrity Esthetician Puts On Her Face Every Day
Simplistic Skin Care
Shani Darden is all about simplicity. The skin-care guru, who handles the faces of a few names you might know (Chrissy Teigen, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Jessica Alba) and acts as the celebrity aesthetician and brand ambassador for Garnier, is as grounded as they come, favoring a pared-down approach to life that extends from what she wears to what she puts on her skin.
“In the morning, I cleanse, use a vitamin C or hyaluronic acid serum, then apply sunscreen,” she says. “At night, it’s the same but minus the sunscreen, and I add retinol.” Her self-titled line is similarly restrained, offering just two items: Texture Reform ($95; shanidarden.com) and Retinol Reform ($95; shanidarden.com) Darden says one of the biggest misconceptions about skin care is that we need to pile on a lot of products. Plus, she knows most women don't operate on a celebrity beauty budget. Her advice: Spend your money on a treatment serum, whether it’s antiaging or skin-clearing because they have the most active ingredients.
“You can get everything else you need—gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen—at the drugstore,” Darden says. The other thing she relies heavily on to look healthy and glowy is free: laughter. “That and retinol are the secrets,” she says. Read on for more of what keeps Darden radiant inside and out.
“I’m not a lab coat kind of aesthetician. I wear one of three white T-shirts with my jeans or a gray sweatshirt almost every day.” Shown: Anine Bing T-shirt ($85; stylebop.com)
Her Signature Scent
“I’m addicted to Frédéric Malle Carnal Flower ($390; fredericmalle.com)."
Her Beauty Essentials
“I always have sunscreen, lip gloss (shown: Nars Cosmetics Lip Gloss in Triple X, $26; narscosmetics.com), and a comb for my bangs on hand.”
“I’m on a Paleo diet now, but I have a run-in with gummy bears about once a week.” Shown: Sugarfina Mama & Baby Bears ($8; sugarfina.com)
Her Favorite Serum
Besides staying out of the sun, incorporating retinol into your routine is the most important antiaging move you can make, but a lot of people’s skin can’t take it. So I made a gentler, over-the-counter version (Shani Darden Texture Reform, $95; shanidarden.com) that doesn’t cause irritation or peeling.
