"When it comes to clean eye makeup, there are finally more diverse shade ranges and sophisticated textures. And they just keep getting better," says makeup artist Suzy Gerstein.

The Innovation:

Many clean-makeup brands turn to advanced, safer synthetic ingredients to create the bold hues found in eyeshadows like Lawless' The One Eyeshadow Palette in First Base (Buy It, $45, sephora.com) and Vapour Beauty's Intention Eyeshadow Quad in Lapis (Buy It, $48, credobeauty.com).

"We use lab-made minerals like iron oxides because we can monitor their purity and consistency when we grow the minerals ourselves, ensuring that they're as vibrant as what goes into a nonnatural eyeliner or shadow," says Hannah Hatcher, a makeup artist for Jane Iredale. To improve blend-ability, some brands replace petroleum with silicones made from sand or quartz.

The Application:

"Minerals look best when they're pressed into the skin, so pat them onto the lid with a flat shadow brush instead of swiping," says Hatcher. "Then use a different clean eye shadow brush to blend and diffuse the edges."

Finally, for the boldest pop of color, layer a matching eyeliner underneath it, like Jane Iredale Mystikol Powdered Eyeliner (Buy It, $24, dermstore.com). To get lashes that hold a curl and don't smudge, "apply a clean mascara first, then top it off with a waterproof formula," says Gerstein.

To get the above look:

  1. Blend Rituel de Fille Ash and Ember Eye Soot in Viscera (Buy It, $38, revolve.com) on the upper and lower lids for a warm smoky eye.
  2. Apply two coats of Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer (Buy It, $17, honest.com).

Surprise: The new clean cream blushes are not only for your cheeks. These multi-use pigments are so versatile, you can apply them anywhere: lips, eyes, you name it. "Because of the safe formulations, there are no rules," says Gerstein. (And Lea Michele is all for these clean beauty buys.)

The Innovation:

These clean makeup products do more than just add a pop of color. They're formulated with good-for-you ingredients. So they won't just be safe for your skin; they may help improve it. One example: brands like RMS Beauty combine highly pigmented minerals with natural skin-care ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter for a nourishing treatment while you wear it, says Tricia Turner, a makeup artist for clean-beauty company NakedPoppy. Try RMS Beauty's Lip Shine in Sublime (Buy It, $25, dermstore.com).

The Application:

"Use a synthetic fluffy brush to make the finish seem more like a natural flush," says Turner. Creams are emollient, so they might end up migrating across your skin throughout the day. To combat that, dust a translucent powder, like 14e Aloe Nourish Prime & Set Powder (Buy It, $34, 14ecosmetics.com), over the top to keep everything in place, says Gerstein.

To get the above looks:

  1. Cool things off by sweeping Kosas 10-Second Eyeshadow in Waterfall and 333 (Buy It, $28 each, sephora.com) under the eye for a pastel pop.
  2. Or warm up your look with orange all over. Apply Jillian Dempsey Lid Tint Satin Eyeshadow in Peach (Buy It, $28, credobeauty.com) and Jane Iredale PureGloss Lip Gloss in Spiced Peach (Buy It, $26, dermstore.com).

Clean Makeup Products for Lips

At last, you can rock a really bold lip with the advancement of today's clean makeup products. Try a bright coral liquid lipstick that stays matte all day or a juicy berry gloss to give your look some extra shine.

The Innovation:

A classic red lipstick is notoriously tough to formulate cleanly. Traditionally, it relies on carmine, an insect-based pigment, for its true hue, but the beauty biz has found a new way. Some brands have turned to FDA-approved dyes, which are safe, synthetic colorants. Others formulate with lakes, another type of dye, which can be naturally derived or synthetic. To sub out the petroleum or aluminum—two ingredients on the no-no list of many clean brands—Jane Iredale opts to bond the lakes with natural resin, while Westman Atelier encapsulates lakes in trace amounts of silicone, which acts as a buffer between the pigment and the skin. (Don't forget to stock up on these clean makeup products from Sephora.)

The Application:

No matter which formula you choose, if you want to boost its vibrancy, layer it. "A sheer lipstick goes so much further with a lip liner underneath," says Gerstein.

To get the above look:

  1. Pair cool-toned pink with neon scarlet. Try Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Happy (Buy It, $55, net-a-porter.com) on eyes.
  2. Use Bite Beauty Power Move Creamy Matte Lip Crayon in Negroni (Buy It, $24, sephora.com) on lips.
