Every year, thousands of techies convene at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to showcase their latest high-tech digital innovations. At this year's event, the beauty geeks represented hard. Beauty companies, old and new, brought their A-game to introduce the next generation of bespoke beauty products and experiences—gadgets and apps designed and customized to address your unique skin needs.
From AI to AR, we cherrypicked the show-stealing personalized beauty and skin-care tools from the 2019 CES and asked an expert to weigh in on how they might change the beauty game. Read on to get a glimpse of the future.
1. Opté Beauty Wand
Move over traditional foundations and concealers—hello Opté Beauty Wand! It's no coincidence this device is called a wand because it works some serious magic. Like photoshop IRL, you wave the wand over your dark spots and watch them vanish instantly, for immediate coverage and long-term spot lightening benefits. Here's how it works. Using a safe, blue LED light, the wand scans your skin, detecting dark spots (not even seen by the naked eye) and other tonal imperfections, including age and sun spots, redness, discoloration, blemishes, scars, and spider veins. Then, an itty-bitty microprocessor analyzes your hyperpigmented areas and configures a tone-perfecting serum containing sun protection, moisturizers, mineral pigments, and a spot-lightener to instantly custom-correct your skin tone (it works on all shades of skin, for that matter) and reduce unevenness over time.
What sets this device apart from others is the way it targets your problem areas. Unlike other foundations, which cover your entire face, the wand delivers a skin brightening serum only where it's needed without affecting the rest of your skin, says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in the department of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. Perfect for those who prefer a flawless, natural-looking complexion with minimal coverage.

2. La Roche-Posay My Skin Track pH
Winner of a CES 2019 Innovation Award, My Skin Track pH is the first wearable and companion app to measure individual skin pH levels.
We know what you're thinking: Why is skin pH a big deal? Well, your pH level is a major indicator of skin health. For reference, healthy skin pH should fall between 4.5 and 5.5, a slightly acidic range, which is essential for a proper skin barrier function, says Dr. Zeichner. "The use of some harsh skin-care products can alter the skin's pH, resulting in irritation," he adds. If you have a pH imbalance, it can cause inflammatory reactions, leading to skin conditions like eczema, atopic dermatitis, and severe dryness. Measuring pH, which historically required a lot of sweat, has always been performed in a laboratory. Until now. Harnessing microfluidic technology, My Skin Track pH's discreet, wearable sensor moves tiny quantities of sweat directly from your pores through an intricate network of microchannels. The result? An accurate pH reading in under 15 minutes.
But it gets better. The companion app—using an advanced algorithm— then utilizes your pH level to evaluate your skin and make customized La Roche-Posay product recommendations to improve skin health and balance pH.
My Skin Track pH will be available this year, but only through select La Roche-Posay dermatologists. The company's ultimate goal is to expand directly to the consumer market, so stay tuned.
3. Olay Future You Simulation
Ever wonder what you'll look like in twenty years? Well, with Olay's Future You Simulation, you no longer have to guess. Prepare to be scared—a little anyway.
The Future You Simulation will be a new feature to Olay's Skin Advisor, a web-based tool that already uses AI to analyze your skin and make personalized product recommendations based on a selfie and a short questionnaire. But unlike the current function, the Future You component uses a proprietary visual sim algorithm giving users a literal snapshot of their face in their future.
Results vary based on different scenarios you select. For example, you can choose to see what you'll look like in two decades if you dutifully follow a daily SPF regimen or if you're lazy about lathering on the sunscreen. Coming face-to-face with your wrinkly, sun-damaged, age-spot-riddled self is quite a wake-up call! (ICYMI, SPF is especially important for runners. "The goal is to encourage you at a young age to take good care of your skin and prevent the development of signs of aging," says Dr. Zeichner. Armed with knowledge of the future—which you can change, thank goodness!—users will be able to better personalize their skin-care routine to help prevent potential skin concerns down the road.
So, ready to see your future? The Future You Simulation is currently live in Asia and will be available in the United States later this year.
4. Coty AR Enabled Smart Mirror
How many times have you considered dying your hair, but chickened out, terrified of a bad result? Or worse, you mustered the courage to try a new, bold color only to regret it instantly?
Coty's AR Enabled Smart Mirror saves you the guessing game and the pain of an unflattering dye job. Co-created with Wella Professionals hair stylists and salon owners, the revolutionary Smart Mirror will transform your salon experience. The device utilizes augmented reality to allow users to try on a range of different hair colors in real time. (This isn't the only smart, interactive mirror on the market: This Futuristic Smart Mirror Makes Livestream Workouts Way More Interactive)
Dreamed of going green? Coming right up! It's like playing virtual dress-up. The best part? Unlike a real dye job, the stakes are way lower, and you can sample shades with zero commitment. Plus, the 360-degree video captures your hair at every angle, so you can see your new digital 'do from multiple perspectives, adding to the authenticity of the experience.
No word on an official launch date yet, but we can't wait to give it a spin.
5. Ioniq One Sprayer
Applying skin-care products by hand isn't an exact science. Case in point: self-tanner. Despite your best efforts to rub it in evenly, the result is often a streaky disaster, especially in hard-to-reach places like your back. (P.S. People Are Forgetting to Apply Sunscreen On a Very Important Part of Their Body)
The Ioniq One Sprayer puts an end to sticky hands and messy application by transforming skin-care products (not only self-tanner, but also sunscreen, moisturizer, and insect repellent) into droplets that spray homogeneously over the skin.
How is that even possible? Ioniq's patented magnetic skin technology is the secret. With the press of a button, the sprayer creates a field of attraction between your skin and the liquid. The result? The liquid is instantly attracted to and evenly distributed across the skin. Reportedly, the magnetic force is so strong, a gusty wind can't even disrupt the liquid-skin attraction.
And, since the device dispenses product evenly, active ingredients will better penetrate the skin, says Dr. Zeichner. The cherry on top: The sprayer—which doesn't emit greenhouse gases—is environmentally friendly.
The only catch? If you want to try the sprayer, you'll have to buy Ioniq's own line of 100 percent vegan skin-care products since they're specially formulated to complement the apparatus. At least initially. The company is currently in the process of working with other skin-care brands with the goal of expanding product choices for customers. Either way, you can expect the product launch in September 2019.
6. Neutrogena MaskiD
Leave it to Neutrogena to take a beloved skin-care staple like the face mask and make it even more amazing. Combining the best of technology and skin-care science, the brand's new MaskiD is the first ever customized, 3-D printed face mask that conveniently ships to your doorstep. Here's how it works: Using 3-D scanning, you snap a selfie to generate a comprehensive map of your face. Next, Neutrogena's Skin 360 app will assess your skin's data to design a personalized mask with a unique configuration of powerful ingredients, including hydrating hyaluronic acid, wrinkle-fighting glucosamine, and skin-brightening vitamins B3 and C. Lastly, these ingredients are custom 3-D printed onto your hydrogel mask in the exact places where you need them most.
"Everyone has different skin needs in different parts of the face," says Dr. Zeichner. "That's what makes this mask so awesome—it suits the individual needs of your face."
