These At-Home Styling Products Are Basically As Good As a Keratin Treatment
CHI Keratin K-Trix 5 Smoothing Treatment
Because my hair is on the finer side, I've found that a lot of the humidity-combating, anti-frizz products can weigh down the cuticle—giving me flat strands with a seriously greasy finish. However, this smoothing lotion left my hair full of bounce and oil-free shine while doing a tremendous job at smoothing. While the bottle claims each use can last through five shampoos, I'll be the first to admit I'm not brave enough to try to stretch it that long.
Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray
Thanks to the addition of polysilicones, this hair product creates a veritable seal around the cuticle from moisture, warding off the effects of humidity. My personal hairstylists swear by its efficacy, citing that water will roll off the hair the way it would a duck's feathers. And while the result wasn't quite as dramatic as that, it still created a shiny AF blowout that made it through a day traipsing around New York City during July's heatwave.
Kerastase L'Incroyable Blowdry Reshapable Creme
Designed for thicker hair textures, this styling cream contains actual wax to help the hair mold to the exact style you're creating. Because my hair is on the thinner side, I probably could have gone with its sister lotion that's lighter weight, but I wanted to get the max amount of frizz and curl control so went with the heavier-duty formula. I found that I was able to create bend at the ends, rather than just leave it stick straight.
Simply Smooth Xtend Keratin Reparative Magic Potion
Although I haven't tried this treatment for myself yet, it has won reviewers' hearts, earning an impressive 4.5 stars on Amazon with nearly 300 glowing reviews. One customer cites that she's "always had a problem with frizzy hair when the weather is wet and damp," but was "amazed that the smallest amount of this product removed all my frizz, even after getting caught in the rain. I need literally one spritz to the palm of my hand and apply to wet hair. Then blow dry. No flat iron needed. This bottle will last forever." BRB, adding to cart.
Garnier Sleek Shot In-Shower Styler
This product lets you cut your styling time in half by leaving you with smoother strands with just a wash. By mixing a dollop with your shampoo in a 1:1 ratio, moisturizing ingredients like argan oil work to seal individual hairs from root to tip for a sleeker look and quicker drying time. Although I'm not sure my seven-minute blow-dry went down to three-and-a-half minutes, my curls were easier to straighten with the assistance of my trusty Revlon One Step Dryer.
Amika The Shield Anti-Humidity Spray
I was admittedly attracted to this product for its name—what more could I want in the middle of a heatwave than an anti-humidity shield, right? Though I'm not the biggest fan of using a flat iron for styling (then my hair is too straight), this spray is perfect for when I want to seal in a super-straight look while protecting my strands from heat-styling damage.
IGK Good Behavior Spirulina Protein Smoothing Spray
With the outright claim that this product smoothes hair and adds shine the same way a keratin treatment does, my interest was piqued from the start. When sprayed, the fine mist almost feels as it isn't sufficient enough to smooth the cuticle, but once heat is applied, the result is the most akin to a keratin treatment of all the products I've tried. Best part was how straight my cowlicks got—pieces I normally have to reserve for torturing with a mini flatiron.
