How to Recreate Lea Michele's Red Carpet-to-Gym Braided Ponytail
Step-by-step instructions from celeb hairstylist Sarah Potempa on how to achieve the ultimate day-to-night hairstyle.
In addition to being serious fitspiration, Lea Michele always seems to kill it in the hair department. Her secret weapon? Sarah Potempa, her hairstylist and close friend of ten years. (Scroll their Instagrams and you'll quickly see the two together are pretty much the definition of hair and friendship #goals.)
Potempa is not only the founder of the Beachwaver (i.e. the curling iron behind the beachy waves you see all over the red carpet and Victoria's Secret runway) but she's also the queen of braids, so we asked her to show us how to recreate one of the ultimate sporty-chic looks: the braided ponytail.
The hairstyle is not only one of Lea's favorite red carpet styles but it's also a go-to workout hairstyle when she's sweating it out at SoulCycle. Read: There's really no situation in which this look isn't appropriate. We just had to know to know *exactly* how she does it.
Here, Potempa's step-by-step instructions for recreating the braided red carpet look:
1. Loosely blow dry bangs straight down (if you have them).
4. Separate hair into three sections and create a 3 strand braid by taking the left over the middle and then the right over the middle. Pancake the braid by gently tugging at the edges to add volume and texture.
