Pumpkin spice latte season is here. (Yes, even though it's still hot outside and fall hasn't even arrived yet.) And that means the big orange gourd is about to start taking over your diet once again. (

But it turns out that the mighty pumpkin actually has some serious benefits when applied externally to skin, too. "Pumpkin has naturally occurring AHAs—alpha hydroxy acids—which helps to promote increased cellular turnover, along with the antioxidants vitamin A and vitamin C that both help with free radical damage and collagen production," says Mona Gohara, M.D., an assistant professor of dermatology at Yale University. So not only are dead skin cells removed, but they're also replaced with younger cells for a literal anti-aging effect.

Whether listed as "pumpkin ferment" or "pumpkin extract" on the ingredient label, "they both help to shed dead skin cells while breaking down proteins into useful amino acids," which plumps the complexion for that lit-from-within look. (Heads' up: Sometimes these products aren't marketed in a way that screams pumpkin—so check the ingredient list.)

Then there are products which are spiked with pumpkinseed oil—a different part of the squash—that provides different skin benefits. "While both pumpkinseed oil and pumpkin ferment have environmentally protective antioxidants, the former is loaded with emollients including omega 3- and 6- fatty acids for serious hydration," says Dr. Gohara.

So it should be no surprise that the beauty industry's gotten in on the PSL craze, offering a slew of new products for fall featuring everyone's favorite autumn flavor—or derivative of, at least. Here, a few you should stock up on.
