Welcome to Capricorn Season 2021: Everything You Need to Know

Here's what you can expect during the sun's annual trip through the industrious, tradition-loving earth sign.

Every year, from approximately December 21 to January 19, the sun moves through the tenth sign of the zodiac, Capricorn, the cardinal earth sign. Ruled by taskmaster Saturn, which is the planet of commitment, discipline, and boundaries, Capricorns are perpetually motivated to achieve. Framing life as an ongoing climb up a series of increasingly steep mountains, they're driven to put their noses to the grindstone, succeed, and earn recognition. While they may have a rep for being workaholics, they're also endlessly loyal, exhibit a fantastic dry sense of humor, and model just how easily you can achieve your dreams if you're committed to a practical, industrious approach.

For those reasons, it's no surprise that Capricorn season is dedicated to splitting your attention among celebrations with loved ones, plenty of analytical self-reflection, and setting ambitious intentions for the year ahead. Throughout the Sea Goat's season, no matter which sign you were born under, you could be feeling more down-to-earth, rational, invested in time-honored traditions, and committed to wrapping up loose ends before plunging into the rest of a whole new year. This is an astrological moment for creating step-by-step, pragmatic plans that'll lead to making your dreams a reality.

But while the sun moves through the driven earth sign annually, the moon and planets move at different paces and patterns in our solar system, so you can expect a unique experience during every sign's season. Here's a glimpse at Capricorn season 2021.

You'll feel torn between the status quo and rebellious change.

The main headline of 2021's astrology has involved a square between taskmaster Saturn, the planet of restriction and boundaries, in Aquarius and revolutionary Uranus, the planet of rebellion and sudden shake-ups, in Taurus. This aspect has been exact twice so far — on February 17 and June 14 — and on December 24, just days after we've moved into Cap season, it'll happen for the third and last time, highlighting this year's theme of the status quo versus electrifying change. Although this aspect could be felt more on a communal level (hello, Omicron and all its downstream effects), it could be useful to consider the areas of life (aka houses) that Taurus and Aquarius rule in your own natal chart, as that'll offer insight on your own internal struggle over the course of 2021, which could be reaching a fever pitch around Christmas Eve. If you have a lot of planetary placements in fixed signs — that's Taurus, Aquarius, Leo, and Scorpio — you'll probably feel this even more than most. Relationships, beauty, and money matters will require extra reflection.

Although it kicked off during Sag season, on December 19, Venus' retrograde lasts for the entire duration of Capricorn season — and is happening in the sign of the Sea Goat. That said, you can expect more internalizing and reflection about topics that fall under Saturn's realm: practicing setting boundaries, learning to say "no," better understanding your limits, etc.

The following dates will be ones to watch over the course of the retrograde:

December 25: Venus pairs up with transformative Pluto for the second time this month (the first was when Venus was direct on December 11), intensifying desires in a way that could even morph into infatuation and power play.

December 29: Messenger Mercury and Venus pair up, paving the way for a heartfelt conversation with a loved one or friend ahead of ushering in 2022.

January 5: Venus forms a friendly sextile to dreamy Neptune in imaginative Pisces, making this a sweet day to rest up — and catch up on your fantasies and creative pursuits.

January 8: The confident sun and Venus get together in Cap, potentially marking a turning point in your personal Venus retrograde narrative. Feeling more confident, you'll be getting fired up to make a move related to the lessons you've been learning during the retrograde.

The first Mercury retrograde of 2022 could make for a sleepy, slow start to the year.

Cap season kind of feels like a microcosm of the whole new year in that it'll play host to more than its fair share of retrogrades. In addition to Venus' backward turn, messenger Mercury will go retrograde in Aquarius on January 14, moving back into Capricorn on the 24th, and remaining in its communication, technology, and transportation-skewing state until February 3. If you're aiming to hit the ground running, determined to make immediate progress on 2022 goals, this retrograde will remind you of some things you need to take care of before you can fully engage with new business. Because this retrograde kicks off in the sign of the Water Bearer (Aquarius) — the ruler of the eleventh house of networking — you might find you can better address back burnered projects with a little extra help from your friends or colleagues. Expect your dreams to get even more colorful and insightful.

Since July 28, Jupiter, the planet of expansion and fortune, has been in Aquarius, amplifying the Water Bearer's humanitarian M.O. That's why, for the most part this year, there's been a huge push toward doing what's best for the collective. Given the fixed nature of the air sign, there's also been an uptick in very rigid, all-or-nothing thinking. Thankfully, on December 28, the big-picture planet shifts into dreamy, empathic Pisces (where it hung out briefly between May 13 to July 28, 2021), which will amplify a more ethereal, spiritual pursuits and imaginative — at times, escapist — perspective until May 10. And because buoyant Jupiter is the traditional ruler of Pisces, it's happy in the water sign, which could mean a well-deserved dose of optimism is in store as 2022 continues.
