For some, 2021 can't help but feel like a blank canvas on which we're hoping to paint our greatest hopes and dreams. For others, flipping the calendar just feels like an annual habit that doesn't necessarily signify change. But a glimpse at the planetary shifts of the next 12 months shows we're definitely at a crossroads astrologically. And the changes ahead could absolutely influence your personal path — not to mention your love and sex life, which (for many), after a year of social distancing, could use its own stimulus package.

Much of the buzz about 2021's astrology has centered on the "Age of Aquarius" — or, more specifically, the movement of taskmaster Saturn and expansive Jupiter from industrious earth sign Capricorn into progressive, humanitarian air sign Aquarius. They'll be traveling through the sign of the Water Bearer until May 13 — and then again from July 28 to December 28. While their presence in the fixed air sign will put more emphasis on social activism, technology, and scientific advancement, these big outer planets could also serve to shift your views on relationships. Given Aquarius' love of striking out against convention and tendency to steer toward bonding in a platonic way, you might be getting comfier with the idea of open relationships, situationships, and a variety of arrangements that reject traditional monogamy.

Lucky Jupiter will, however, spend May 13 to July 28 in romantic, empathic Pisces — and then on December 28, re-enter the mutable water sign for about a year, bringing a more spiritual, dreamy, rose-colored-glasses vibe to the way we connect with others. A particularly sweet highlight of this period will fall on June 3, when the planet of fortune forms a harmonizing trine to Venus, the planet of love, in Cancer, setting the stage for even more romantic sparks to fly than usual during this playful, balmy time of year.

Meanwhile, we can look forward to Mars, the planet of action and sex, firing up the libidos of a lot more signs than it did last year (when it remained in Aries for basically half the year, thanks to a retrograde there). It'll move from Taurus all the way through Sagittarius, bringing each sign roughly six weeks' worth of get-up-and-go energy to create momentum, stand up for their beliefs, pursue their hottest desires, and express themselves in a physical way.

Relationship-oriented Venus, which also retrograded in 2020, will move forward through most of 2021, offering up a blast of pleasure-seeking, romantic vibes to each sign for approximately three to five weeks.

From September 26 to October 18, relationship issues could require a second look or tying up of loose ends, thanks to communicator Mercury spending its third — and final, whew — retrograde of the year in Venus-ruled, love- and partnership-oriented Libra. Yep, you could very well hear from exes, but this could be the ideal time to remember how someone became a former partner or fling in the first place.

And the year's four eclipses — three of which continue along the Sagittarius-Gemini axis, and one that is the first of the upcoming Taurus-Scorpio series — will nudge you to open yourself up to change. Around the following dates — especially the lunar eclipses — you could find you're compelled to get out of your comfort zone in relationships in order to learn and grow emotionally:

  • May 26: Lunar eclipse and full moon in Sagittarius
  • June 10: Solar eclipse and new moon in Gemini
  • November 19: Lunar eclipse and full moon in Taurus
  • December 3: Solar eclipse and new moon in Sagittarius

Ultimately, 2021 could be a year to pursue your wildest romantic dreams and sexiest fantasies — especially if you're willing to keep an open mind.

Aries (March 21–April 19)

While expansive Jupiter and taskmaster Saturn both move through your eleventh house of networking from December 17 and 19, 2020, respectively, until May 13, and then again from July 28 to December 28, you'll feel luckiest while working and learning with friends and colleagues. That said, if you're attached, you and your sweetheart might find new opportunities to connect while doing volunteer work, planning group dates (if only socially-distanced or over Zoom), or having an eye-opening experience that lends itself to making new connections as a couple. If you're single, you could connect with someone on a platonic level initially, and then perhaps find that friendship is a perfect jumping-off point for more. And from June 11 to July 29, go-getter Mars, your ruling planet, will be in your fifth house of romance, making it easy for you to express exactly what you want in bed. You'll also have extra energy to channel into making your fantasies a reality, so don't hold back from sharing all the dirty details with someone special — especially while sweet Venus brings even more of a focus to pleasure and romance by joining Mars from June 26 to July 21.

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

From July 21 to August 15, sweet Venus, your ruling planet, moves through your fifth house of romance, amplifying your natural charm and inner light and turning your attention to matters of the heart. You'll want to prioritize lighthearted fun with your sweetheart or, if you're single, you'll find it's easier to be spontaneous while connecting with potential matches. And while go-getter Mars is there from July 29 to September 14, you could be feeling like expressing yourself in a more passionate way. Yep, you might even trade your signature slow and steady Taurean approach for being more playful and carefree. Around November 19, the lunar eclipse and full moon fall in your sign, and you could be feeling all sorts of emotions. You could feel like the universe is nudging you to release whatever isn't serving you anymore — especially when it comes to your closest one-on-one relationships. It could be a belief or a toxic entanglement. Either way, this is a crucial time to tune into your heart and allow yourself to make peace with change. Closing doors or switching gears could lay the groundwork for a more satisfying approach down the road.

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

If you've been feeling like the universe hasn't really been meeting you where you are when it comes to your love life, you'll find it's easier to assert your needs and desires even more naturally while go-getter Mars is in your sign from March 3 to April 23. At the same time, you'll feel like you have extra energy to pour into whatever it is you've been craving, whether that's more steamy one-on-one time with your partner or an intellectually and physically satisfying connection with someone new. Just be sure to check in with yourself every now and then to make sure you're not pushing so hard for something that requires a bit of breathing room to come together in its own time. And three out of four of the eclipses this year — May 26, June 10, and December 3 — should build on last year's narrative around what you want for yourself and in partnerships. It could be time to get super-open and honest with yourself about what's working and what's not as well as what you deserve versus what you could be settling for.

Cancer (June 21–July 22)

You likely had your fair share of lessons and opportunities in partnership last year, Cancer, but 2021 is all about deepening your bonds and refusing to settle for anything less than soulful, emotionally gratifying closeness, thanks to fortunate Jupiter moving through your eighth house of emotional bonds and sexual intimacy from now until May 13 and again from July 28 to December 28. And let's be real: The fact is that you need that kind of connection to really enjoy sex anyway. Then while big-picture Jupiter dips into your ninth house of adventure from May 13 to July 28, traveling or having another horizon-broadening experience could set the stage for getting out of your comfort zone between the sheets, too. And from October 30 to December 12, go-getter Mars in your fifth house of romance can make the holiday season feel extra magical. You'll be especially charismatic, creative, and razor-focused on putting your energy toward pursuing pleasure in all forms. This is sure to prove off-the-charts attractive to your S.O. or potential partners you're swiping on. Trust in going with the flow and leaning into your most spontaneous, playful impulses.

Leo (July 23–August 22)

From now until May 13 and again from July 28 to December 28, fortunate Jupiter spends time in your seventh house of partnership, bringing you a ton of heartwarming bliss when you're bonding with someone special one-on-one. If you're attached, you could feel even more in sync with your sweetheart, and you might decide to take your relationship status to the next level. If you're single and swiping for a lasting, meaningful connection, you'll have the planet of luck on your side. And from May 13 to July 28, Jupiter's dip into your eighth house of emotional bonds and sexual intimacy can help you explore and learn more about your sexual desires and fantasies. That time period is sure to be especially hot, thanks to action-oriented Mars in your sign from June 11 to July 29 and romantic Venus there from June 26 to July 21. The planets of sex and love pair up to support your pursuit of bliss in all forms. Your confidence will be soaring, and you'll be glowing from the inside out — and no, not just because you had multiple orgasms (but maybe because of that too).

Virgo (August 23–September 22)

From May 13 to July 28 — and from December 28 to May 10, 2022, expansive Jupiter will breathe lots of luck and joy into an existing or potential partnership. If you're attached, you'll feel like it's easier than usual to get on the same page with your sweetheart, and together, you'll be able to cross the finish line on shared goals (or orgasms). And if you're single, you'll get the green light to envision your ideal partner and trust your intuition to lead you to them. You completely deserve the type of bond your heart is set on — and this could be the year you not only find it but watch it flourish. And from July 21 to August 15, relationship-oriented Venus in your sign can turn up the volume on your natural magnetism. You could be overwhelmed by how much attention you're being paid by potential matches if you're single. If you're attached, it's a sweet time to plan that perfect romantic getaway you've been intently researching — and then let go of the specifics and see where the moment takes you. Because your confidence and creativity are amplified, speaking from the heart (and yep, giving that overthinking brain a rest) can come more easily as well.

Libra (September 23–October 22)

You'll want to prioritize one-on-one time with your sweetheart or someone you've had your eye on from March 21 to April 14 while romantic Venus, your ruling planet, moves through your seventh house of partnership. Then, from April 14 to May 8, its trip through your eighth house of emotional bonds and sexual intimacy can intensify how you're expressing your emotions. You won't want to settle for small talk or surface-level connection, preferring to bear old emotional wounds in order to get even more in sync emotionally — and physically. And from now until May 13 and later from July 28 to December 28, lucky Jupiter in your fifth house of romance will be expanding all your opportunities to experience pleasure and joy in relationships. You could feel like the universe is offering you an array of relationship flavors — from having lighthearted, sexy fun to being completely swept off your feet by your sweetheart or, if you're single, a slew of potential matches. In fact, carving out one-on-one time with your S.O. or swiping on someone special — or at least incredibly fun — could get a lot easier and more exciting (possibly vaccinated, in-person dates!?).

Scorpio (October 23–November 21)

From May 13 to July 28 and December 28 to May 10, 2022, fortunate Jupiter hangs in your fifth house of romance, magnifying your ability and desire to express what's in your heart, ideally in a sweet, joyful, creative way. You could feel like you're being presented with a grown-up version of "Choose Your Own Adventure: Love Life Edition" in a lot of ways, whether that means being able to take more road trips with your sweetheart and bond over new experiences or meet exciting new matches who offer you the opportunity to get more in touch with your sexual and romantic desires. The bottom line: It'll be easier to shrug off the need to make concrete plans, have fun in love, and make your fantasies a reality. And around November 19, the lunar eclipse and the full moon fall in your seventh house of partnership, requiring that you do a bit of soul searching and better understanding deep-rooted, challenging emotions that have lead to a particular relationship crossroads. It could be time to heal wounds from the past so that you can move forward with someone special.

Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)

Thanks to go-getter Mars in your eighth house of emotional bonds and sexual intimacy from April 23 to June 11, you'll have the chance to become even more aware of what you want — and need — physically, emotionally, and mentally from an intimate partner. Expressing yourself sexually comes more naturally now, too, but you'll want to be sure that you and your partner are on the same page in terms of what you want out of life. Shared passions can act even more than usual like glue for your relationship. And while your ruling planet, lucky Jupiter, moves through your fourth house of home life from May 13 to July 28 and then from December 28 to May 10, 2022, you'll be even more capable of creating your ultimate tranquil "nest." If you're single, strengthening your sense of security can help you gravitate to potential partners who only add to that feeling. And if you're attached, building a domestic sanctuary with your sweetheart can only serve to bring you closer. This period could also lend itself to healing old wounds inflicted by loved ones in order to foster closer bonds and enjoy more satisfaction in your relationships.

Capricorn (December 22–January 19)

Romantic Venus visits your sign twice this year — first from January 8 to February 1 and again, from November 5 until it goes retrograde there on December 19 — allowing you several weeks in which you could feel extra motivated to prioritize pleasure (yes, even above work!). You could find that going on — or even just planning — a vacation with your sweetheart or talking about your hopes, dreams, and wishes with a promising app match has you feeling lighter and optimistic about what the future holds for you romantically. And when the love planet forms harmonizing trines to transformative Pluto (in January and December), you'll feel empowered to not only voice but pursue your deepest desires in a concrete way. And around November 19, when the lunar eclipse and the full moon falls in your fifth house of romance, you could feel resentful if fun and romance has taken a backseat to other demands in your life and decide enough is enough. Addressing your emotional needs is just as important as getting ahead on your personal and professional goals, and recognizing that you deserve to experience magic and fulfillment in either a current or future relationship can allow you to manifest your ideal vision.

Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

While relationship-oriented Venus is in your sign from February 1 to 25, just about everyone will take note of how much you're radiating from the inside out. And you won't want to deny yourself any opportunity for romance, whether that's extra time to snuggle up with your sweetheart or swipe on promising matches. Letting yourself get carried away in something that feels right but doesn't necessarily make sense logically is totally okay — as long as you're deriving pleasure from the experience. Then, don't be surprised if your most romantic desires are intensified, and it feels like your hottest fantasies could more organically become a reality around June 10 when the solar eclipse and the new moon falls in your fifth house of romance. This can be a powerful time for not only acknowledging what you want in your relationships but sharing all the details — if not with an existing partner, then a trusted friend or loved one. The more you talk — or even journal — about what you want, the more within reach it could feel.

Pisces (February 19–March 20)

While lucky Jupiter is in your sign from May 13 to July 28, and again from December 28 to May 10, 2022, you'll have a burst of optimistic energy that you can apply toward any long-held dream, including your most romantic wishes. If you're single, you'll feel more hopeful than ever that you'll meet someone who feels like a soulmate, and if you're attached, you'll be more assured that you and your S.O. will be able to hit your next relationship milestone or a shared goal in the near future. And that heartfelt positivity can attract well-deserved rewards in all areas of your life, including your closest relationships. And from July 21 to August 15, sweet Venus in your seventh house of partnership boosts your ability to pursue shared goals alongside your sweetheart. Working as a team can almost feel like foreplay now. And if you're single, opening up about your long-term plans to potential matches could lead you to someone you'll find you're impressively in sync with. Discussing your aspirations and ways you might be able to collaborate now or later could end up lighting a lasting spark.
