The "Condom Snorting Challenge" Is Even Worse Than It Sounds
It's not worth the views.
In case the Tide Pod challenge wasn't bizarre/dangerous enough, another viral video challenge is taking its place in the spotlight: the "condom challenge." Not to be confused with the water-filled condom challenge that took off c. 2015, this one involves snorting a condom up your nose and pulling it out of your mouth. (Yes, really.) If you're squeamish when it comes to nasal passages, you'll want to take our word for it instead of searching #condomchallenge.
The challenge has recently spiked in notoriety, but it's actually been around for a while (at least since 2013 when YouTuber Shane Dawson completed it in a video). While the shock factor of shoving something up your nose and pulling it out of your mouth might make for a viral video, the risks involved aren't worth any number of likes and views.
"Nothing other than saline or a nasal spray should go into you nasal cavity, mostly because the tissue's extremely delicate," says Shilpi Agarwal, M.D., family medicine physician. "Those are mucous membranes that help to filter out toxins, so something so huge like a condom, which is typically made of latex, would be really abrasive in that area." That can lead to several issues, including infection or bleeding from trauma, Dr. Agarwal says. Choking on the condom is another huge concern, she says. Plus, if things don't go as planned and you end up swallowing the condom instead of pulling it out of your mouth, it might end up in your stomach or you could inhale it into your lungs and develop bronchitis or pneumonia.
All in all, the challenge is super risky. "Highly trained specialists who do ear and nose and throat surgery still use a lot of different tools to access the nasal cavity at the back of the throat," Dr. Agarwal says. "So with these untrained people putting something up the nose, it's highly likely that for every one that you see on social media, there are probably a lot of kids who have tried it and either nearly choked or caused bleeding."
Luckily, there are plenty of other ways to get a video to go viral that don't involve swallowing detergent, shoving a condom up your nose, or otherwise risking your life. Our advice: Find a meme-worthy pet and use your condoms for these clit-stimulating sex positions instead.
