For the past seven months, I've been very focused on the big-picture goal of losing 80 pounds. But my life coach, Lauren Zander, recently encouraged me to try a different approach: Forget about the future and concentrate on the now. I need to think about what I can do to be my healthiest today. In other words, rather than get anxious because I have to fit in five workouts this week, I should focus on the three-mile run I'm going to do this morning. The same goes for food: Instead of worrying about eating perfectly for the entire week, I need to take it one meal at a time. At dinner tonight I can choose a salad over a slice of pizza or fruit instead of ice cream. Short-term thinking may be the best thing I can do for my long-term success.
