While talking about her exciting new project on the Today Show, the 41-year-old actress revealed that she's recently lost 20 pounds. Her decision to shed some weight came after she'd put her health on the back burner for quite some time.

"It came sort of in the middle of a moment in my life where I had sort of let myself go, due to personal circumstances," she said of her weight loss-presumably referring to her recent split from ex-husband Will Kopelman.

Barrymore continues by explaining how her new character Sheila, a human flesh addict, inspired her to get back into shape.

"I thought, 'I could come alive with Sheila,' and it was a really great goal line for me because I think as much as the weight loss, everything's just really subtle," she says. "It's attitudinal, it's empowerment, it's confidence. It's all of these things, that's she's lost in her life, that I sort of felt like I had lost in my life, and it's such a blessing to come alive with her. And it really was so positive for me."

While she didn't reveal exactly how she managed to drop weight, Barrymore jokingly suggested that Sheila's diet would probably work for those trying to make a lifestyle change.

"Well if you're eating, in her case, human flesh, I mean, I basically thought, well, if a woman is just eating simple protein, every day all day long, she would lose weight," she says. "It's like a very macabre Atkins."
