Victoria's Secret Angel Adriana Lima's Runway-Ready Diet

Adriana Lima's been blowing up our newsfeed today! The Victoria's Secret Angel found herself in the spotlight after she revealed the extreme diet she undergoes every year before the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Lima admitted to The Telegraph that nine days before the show, she cuts out all solid foods and consumes only liquids, while simultaneously amping her workouts up to two per day. 12 hours before the show, she doesn't consume anything, not even water. We (ok, I) couldn't help but raise our eyebrows when we heard this news, so we went to the SHAPE Diet Doctor, Mike Roussell, PhD, to get his take on what this diet does to your body. The results? You might be surprised!

"I wouldn't recommend this diet to anyone," Roussell says. "There are better ways to get the same results. But for the amount of time she was doing it, to get the look she wanted, it's not detrimental to her health in the long-run."

Roussell points out that many major athletes such as wrestlers or mixed martial arts fighters undergo some of the same tactics in order to make a certain weight before a big match. "For example, drinking tons of water for a couple of days and then cutting it out is something that many athletes do," Roussell says. "We call it water loading." Indeed, multiple people have compared Lima to a long-distance runner training for a marathon, saying that there's no difference between what she and lots of athletes have done to get in shape.

Bottom line? A one-time diet plan like this won't kill you. It won't even hurt you. But if you are going to undertake a diet like Lima's, Roussell stresses the importance of working with a nutritionist. After a few weeks of consuming nothing but liquids, your digestive tract experiences some atrophy, he says, so it's important to ease back into eating solid foods.

"To be honest, she probably wasn't getting all the nutrients she needed," he says. "And she probably felt miserable. She could have eaten something the day of and still performed the way she wanted."

Still, Lima says all the hard work was worth it.

"Actually, the Victoria's Secret show is the highlight of my life. Becoming an Angel, once I achieved that, it was a dream come true for me. And I know that after all this is done, when I sit down with my daughter one day, we are going to look back and it's going to be very special," she told The Telegraph.

Overall, it's not uncommon to hear models talk about eating whatever they want, so maybe the fact that Lima has been so public about how grueling it really is to get runway-ready is what's caught everybody's attention.

What do you guys think? Is Adriana Lima's diet something you might ever try to get ready for a big event?
