They’re so simple you’re sure to succeed!

Now that my year-long weight loss journey with SHAPE is coming to a close, I realize that there are certain lessons that have really worked for me along the way. These are the tips from my nutritionist, Keri Gans, that are going to help me stay on track in the years to come, even when I don't have a team of professionals by my side:

1. Food journaling. Writing down what I eat helps me be mindful of what I'm putting in my mouth.

2. Carbs are not the devil! They are a necessary part of a well-balanced diet. The important thing to remember is to eat whole-wheat and whole grains and to stick appropriate serving sizes.

3. Make small changes for overall health. Eat low-fat dairy instead of full-fat. Bake potatoes instead of frying them. Eat whole-wheat instead of white bread. Start every dinner with a colorful salad. Begin the day with a healthy, balanced breakfast. If you want French fries with your burger, go ahead, just skip the bun.

4. Enjoy everything in moderation. That includes a glass of wine a day or an after-dinner dessert that is under 100 calories.
